I was kind of surprised to learn that nearly all of them have been buried in one mass grave under a monument near their final battle.
Said monument was only rediscovered by a greek archeologist in the 19th century. Having the bodies dug out, he saw that most of them had their arms intervined. Thus, he (or modern historians, cannot remember) crafted the story of the army made of lovers this comic was inspired by.
The literary evidence (and associated cultural memory in the West) for the Sacred Band long predates the discovery of those buried in the monument, though.
