But finally, finally after all that. The core is energy production is not a monopoly it is a largely free market where many businesses and even many countries can create energy production in the UK. Home owners, co-ops, France nuclear, Norwegian hydro, gas, wind.
What you are talking about is electrical distribution being a natural monopoly. The National Grid (Great Britain) is largely a single monopoly but that’s not where the price comes from. The UK has a lot of oversight of that and inter connectors and offshore wind leases and even maximum pricing. How are companies going to shaft consumers when the UK government limits the amount they can sell for.

I’ve lived in multiple UK houses and never once seen a socket with a fuse. Are you saying this was change way way back in the day?
All houses have fuse boxes (which then got upgraded to circuit breakers). Not one fuses in sockets. Would be a fucking nightmare to take the socket off and change a fuse.

The UK is so ignorant of heat pumps it is shocking. It’s willful ignorance where people know better than the experts. Same with induction hobs.
Having lived in Aus and NZ. Heat pumps and induction is by far superior technology.
This is not to say the UK doesn’t have a drastic issue with insulation. But that’s a separate matter.
There is no excuse for all new builds being mandated with heat pumps and induction today.
