Meta Platforms Inc. is deploying a new homegrown chip to help power its artificial intelligence services, aiming to decrease its reliance on semiconductors from Nvidia Corp. and other outside companies.
Wait, meta is in the manufacturing business? I missed the memo. I’m in electronics mfg and I’m surprised anyone would bother. It’s a hard business. Do they make their chips or foundry them? Anyone have any insights?
Given Nvidia doesn’t even make their own chips I would assume Meta is just designing them and having someone else make them. What I’m confused by is that I thought that Google and the like have been making their own chips for a while for example Google TPUs. Not sure if Meta is just getting into the game or if it’s them splitting hairs over general AI chips vs Gen AI chips.
