I agree with some of your points but some of your other points simple won’t/aren’t working. Increasing the retirement age and getting old people back into the workforce simply won’t/isn’t working. Why would a company, even a fast food joint or a loblaws, want to hire someone 60+ when they can easily pick and choose from the thousands of kids from half way across the world that will work longer hours for less pay and benefits than Uncle Bob? they won’t and they currently aren’t. So that will never work.
Also said kids aren’t coming here to become doctors or care givers or anything of real value. They’re traveling from overseas to enroll in community colleges for the potential of an easy PR status. There was a Toronto Life article a couple months ago where one of them admitted as much. His application was for studying for ECE. That’s fantastic, that’s what we need…except on landing he “changed his mind” and instead went to Seneca to get a certification to be a baggage handler at Pearson, not exactly what we need. Go to virtually ANY job fair in this country and you’ll see kids from overseas quite literally lining up around the block to get a minimum wage job. No old person is doing that. You can’t raise the age of retirement or encourage older people back into the work force if there’s simply nothing available for them.
Also you want to build towers and reclaim farm land/green spaces. I’m sorry but we currently don’t have the luxury of picking and choosing what we build and where we build it. We need housing, all kinds, full stop and we need to throw that down any where we can. We’re seeing historic levels of homelessness in this country and our shelters, nation wide, are full. over 50% of shelter space in Toronto is currently occupied by Refugees who we’ve essentially said “yes we’ll take you in, but we’re not going to help you. Welcome to Canada, Good luck.” And now we also said we’ll take in Palestinian refugees? We’re doing more harm than good for these people. We literally have no where to house them.
I’m all for immigration but our leaders consistently half ass it. We do more harm than good. It’s clearly evident we don’t have the infrastructure in place to help them. We can’t even help our own citizens. Build housing, build AFFORDABLE housing, more pay for doctors/nurses and increase spending on healthcare, have education standards in place for international students, stop allowing people travelling half way across the world to just enroll in a community college, more money for teachers, get the damn cost of living under control and do something about the insane price of food. And that’s only SOME of the things we need to address. Once we have our house in order than feel free to open the front door and welcome people in.
We’re currently living in a house fire and the Governments idea to control the flames is to throw more fuel at it in hopes it’ll sort itself out.
