He already owes her $5 million, and he’s not going to pay that, either

    That’s not how it works.

Trump is appealing the $5 million judgment. And when you appeal, the first thing you do is write a check for the entire amount - a check made out to the court. That way if you lose the appeal, the court can pay the plaintiff.

So, in fact, Trump had already paid the $5 million, even if Carroll can’t spend it yet.

You sure that’s how it works? I thought Alex Jones appealed his judgement. And definitely didn’t have 1.5Billion to just pay the court with.

        Alex Jones declared bankruptcy protection.

That means that all debts will be debated in court for the best interest of all parties. Ex: Alex Jones can only pay 1.5 Billion if he keeps his job and keeps working and doing Alex Jones things, so don’t take anything away that prevents Alex Jones from doing his job. (etc. etc.)

USA has a ton of protections to people who declare bankruptcy that no other country has. For better or worse, everyone (including Alex Jones) gets these protections.

That’s how it works in federal court, as in this case.

Jones was sued in Connecticut state court, where the procedure might be different.
