Hexorg@beehaw.orgto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the greatest invention of 21st century, in your opinion?
1·1 年前Good point! I wonder if we’re spoiled by computer invention though. Would be interesting to compare preWW2 invention rates and now. I suspect computers just made everything else easier, but now we’re back to hard problems
Hexorg@beehaw.orgto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the greatest invention of 21st century, in your opinion?
61·1 年前To be fair, there’s only been 24 year’s of 21 century. Most things you gave listed happened at the end of the 20th century. But also the question is somewhat self negating - we won’t know what’s the greatest invention until we see it working great, but it takes much more than 24 years to take an invention from concept to consumption. For example computational biology is kicking off. Computer aided dna generation started in the past 24 years. But it’s so new few people think about it. Just like no one thought of internet as the greatest invention in the 70s… it was just too new

1·2 年前That’s because the full version of that mentality is “Tax me less, don’t use my tax money to subsidize someone else, give that money to my company!” Instead

3·2 年前I agree with everything you said, but also it’d be super interesting to cancel the factory farming subsidies and see whole foods flourish. Theoretically this would raise the cost of burgers and lower the cost of vegetables and other healthy products.
I agree it’ll never happen, but it would probably move US closer to European diets.
Hexorg@beehaw.orgto Gaming@beehaw.org•What type of game do you want to play that doesn't really exist?
1·2 年前An MMO where is truly feels like player versus environment and not another pawn versus environment. Stop having 300 people deliver the one lost ring to the same npc for days at a time. I think one way to do it is to provide a general prompt to GPT models and have them generate a few hundred similar but different quests that get assigned per player. But also keep track of these generated differences to weave a story. Make there be more npcs than players.
Hexorg@beehaw.orgto Free and Open Source Software@beehaw.org•What do you think about Apple and its ecosystem? (And a little conversation I had with a colleague)
0·2 年前While it’s true that Apple doesn’t contribute anything to being open there’s always a cost-benefit trade off. “Bad guys ™️” made chemo, but we still use it. If you’re such a big proponent of openness and you use Apple - donate some cash (as able) to an open source project. It doesn’t have to be all or none.

Apparently Nintendo switch 2 is using the standard already, so it might go over better than Sony.
