This is Lemmy, other than the political bullshit it’s just a bunch of Linux users telling each other how great they are for all using Linux. None of it is helpful because they are all just preaching to the choir.

Or maybe the extreme condition known as out of doors
I think it’s entirely possible that they chose to compare to a 3 year old phone not because they are only targeting those upgrades to people with 3 years old phones, but because it sounds a lot more impressive that way instead of just the smaller incremental improvements over last years model.
It should also be noted that Apple admitted at one point to purposefully slowing down older iPhones too, which very clearly was done to get people to upgrade. If that’s not planned obsolescence I don’t know what is.
You talk about them as if they are some benevolent entity, when that’s just very much not the case.
I am a software developer, I understand what goes into developing software. He is allowed to value his work at whatever he thinks it’s worth.
But as users we are allowed to think he is asking too much or pushing too many ads or whatever. It’s not disrespect, it’s an opinion, about a mobile app that now has ads on the main feed and in every comment section, that only works based on a platform that is very specifically known for being open and not pushing ads. And it’s an especially high price for an app that is still very under development and has only recently just gotten an update for the first time in months, even when some features had stopped working.
I have no issues with him asking to be compensated for his work, and I am glad he makes it available for free, but the ads are getting intrusive, and we are all entitled to our opinions. I don’t think there was anything disrespectful about the way I shared my opinion, but I do think it’s crap to tell us we are being disrespectful just because you don’t share that opinion.
I have switched apps. Didn’t realize I wasn’t allowed to share my opinion.
Yea it’s a bit unfortunate. In my opinion sync is the smoothest and most polished lemmy app. I get that ljdawson should be compensated for making a great app, but the amount of ads is kinda ridiculous now and the $20 ad removal price just feels exorbitant for a mobile app.
Same here, just for gaming. Have multiple other computers for actual computer needs. Though admittedly, none of them are running Linux as the primary OS yet.
Overall I agree, unless of course that voice of yours has an opinion that the lemmy hive mind has decided is bad (Israel, cars, capitalism, renting/landlords, non Linux operating systems)
I’m fine paying, but $20 to remove ads is a very big ask for a mobile app, when it was maybe $3 or $5 for the old reddit app. Especially so when it seems he comes and goes and updates to a very in development app have stopped for months at a time.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not making any demands, I agree with everything you say, but the ad removal option is quite a lot especially when there are many free lemmy apps too.
As an open platform that’s similar to reddit, I’m in favor of it.
The reality though is not that great. And a lot of it comes down to at least some of the people who are here.
There doesn’t really seem to be enough content to allow for browsing a curated list of communities yet, so I mainly browse by all. And what I have seen are a handful of seemingly extreme viewpoints with little to no room for nuance and discussion and an attitude from those people that they are absolutely correct in their beliefs and ideas. I’m talking tankies, hatred for Israel, hatred for cars, hatred for landlords/renting, and evangelism for Linux.
I know that having extreme attitudes is certainly not unique to lemmy as it exists all over the Internet and elsewhere. But it does seem to be fairly concentrated here. And again, without enough engagement in the smaller or more niche communities there isn’t really enough content on its own.
So instead of actively browsing communities I want which would likely end up with very little content, I have started blocking instances and communities instead so I can still get a mix, but filter out things that I don’t like. And that doesn’t make for a great experience.
I have also seen some really stupid/ridiculous admin/mod drama that people also seemed to think wouldnt carry over from reddit, but of course it has.
All that to say, I still enjoy it enough to continue to browse. But I don’t really participate often. And it has to a degree eliminated at least some of the bullshit from reddit.
I dunno… Have you ever opened a crab up before cooking it? It’s pretty much all goo inside an exoskeleton.
So you hate that PCs are more capable and can display better graphics at higher framerates and have rationalized it to yourself that worse graphics and framerates on a console are “how the developers intended”.
I can understand not wanting to tinker with settings and just load a game up and know what to expect in terms of graphics and framerate, but I just cannot disagree more with what you are saying here. Building games to console limitations and not even giving the option for fidelity or framerate just seems like a step backward.

The results of a war fought about that (and other obvious things) disagrees too.
There’s way too many people in here that either don’t know the difference between succession and secession, or don’t know how to spell, or just were too lazy to look at what they were typing or what was being autocorrected.
This is my biggest issue with lemmy. The userbase is not particularly one I want to interact with or even read their comments most of the time. And it seems there is very little room for nuance or any real differing opinions. And worse, it seems most here are convinced they are correct (though that could be everywhere). There are a few niche communities devoid of that, but they are so small that there is either very little content or the same handful of people are doing all the posting.
Love the idea of lemmy as an alternative to reddit. In practice, it’s absolutely not a place I want to fully spend my time.
So they can make money off it just in case?
And you don’t see that on lemmy? It’s everywhere. Well maybe less so actual arguments and more just 100% anti Israel.
And most other countries also have much stricter gun control laws too.
We could work on those things and the gun problem too.
So again, you are being very transparent by completely disregarding the guns as if they somehow aren’t part of the gun violence problem.
Either way. I think this is where I drop out of this. We are going in circles and while I agree we should work on the things you mention, we clearly just disagree about the actual guns themselves. And of course neither of us are actually in a direct position to make changes to any of those things, I assume. So you have a good one.
It’s almost like Lemmy is just another social media site with the same types of people as every other social media site. Regardless of how seemingly a lot of Lemmy users view themselves and Lemmy as a whole.
