I looked into this a little bit out of curiosity and the first jet train experiment was in the US 4 years earlier than this one (1966 and 1970).
Apparently these /do/ work but I’m going to guess no one ever got the logistics and safety side of it to be cost-effective enough to replace normal trains before mag-lev became the practical high-speed solution (again purely a guess).
Also, the noise would be absolutely horrific. You wouldn’t be able to live with half a mile of a railroad track
Just put a big big big ball of cotton over the engines to keep the sound from being too loud. This engineering stuff is easy.
