Explanation: The Roman politician Crassus was one of the richest men in Rome, but craved the one thing his money couldn’t buy - military glory. In the Third Servile War, Crassus got his chance, and led the Legions of the Roman Republic to defeat Spartacus and his gladiator-led slave uprising in Italy.
… but Pompey Magnus, an influential rival, was returning from Spain at the time, and used the opportunity to mop up a few stragglers and claim he was the real victor of the war. Crassus never forgave Pompey for stealing the spotlight during his one chance at military acclaim.
