My upbringing had slightly more nuance. It was like, believing in God gets you into heaven, but if you really believe then you’ll do good works as well. It’s not the good works that get you to heaven, but without them are you really saved? Then again, most of the people who preached this were pretty devoid of many good works, but ah well.
This is the version of Christianity I was taught as a child. Believe in God? Heaven. Don’t believe? Hell.
