In my mind “tragedy” implies an unavoidable incident, like a natural disaster or an accidental death. It’s a tragedy when an innocent bystander is hit by a stray bullet.
I wouldn’t use that label for Tienanmen. Everything the CCP did was purposeful, intentional and egregiously brutal.
It wasn’t a tragedy.
It was a crime.
