Or perhaps the end of the beginning, if you’re a little more pessimistic.

Image is from this Bloomberg article, from which I also gathered some of the information used in the preamble.

While Trump was off in the Middle East in an incompetent attempt to solve a geopolitical and humanitarian crisis, China has been doing something much more productive.

Chinese officials, including Xi Jinping, had a summit with CELAC (a community of 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries). There, he promised investment, various declarations of friendship, and visa-free entry for 30 days for citizens of Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay. Lula signed over 30 agreements with China. Colombia is joining the New Development Bank and hopes to gain the money for a 120-kilometer railway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific coasts as an alternative route to the Panama Canal. Even Argentina, ruled by arch-libertarian and arch-dipshit (but I repeat myself) Milei, was uncharacteristically polite with China as he secured a currency swap renewal to shore up their international reserves.

It wouldn’t really be correct to say that Latin America is “siding with China over the US” - leaders in the region will continue to make many deals with America for the foreseeable future, and even Trump’s bizarre economic strongman routine won’t make them break off economic and diplomatic relations. What’s significant here is that despite increasing American pressure for those leaders to break off all ties with China, few appear to be listening - and given that China is perhaps the most important economy on the planet right now, that is a very predictable outcome.

As the current American empire takes actions to try and avoid their doom, those very actions only guarantee it. As Latin America grows ever more interconnected with China and continues to develop, America will grow ever more panicked and demanding, and this feedback loop will - eventually - result in the death of the Monroe Doctrine.

CNN and BBC Team up to Help Bolsonaro - Telesur/Brian Mier

0 fact checking on gossip spread by Eduardo Bolsonaro on visit by US delegation fools Brazilian public into thinking David Gamble had arrived to sanction Brazilian officials

    Article

On May 3, a rumor spread by Eduardo Bolsonaro—son of former President Jair Bolsonaro and the family’s primary liaison to the international far-right—was treated as news by Brazilian, U.S., and British-affiliated outlets in Brazil. These outlets amplified an unfounded claim that Trump administration officials were arriving in Brazil to sanction Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes for allegedly violating U.S. free speech principles.

In a May 3 article in CNN Brasil, titled “Trump Administration Representative is Coming to Brazil to Discuss Sanctions Against Moraes” (translated from Portuguese), journalist Leandro Magalhães asserted that David Gamble, the Trump administration’s Acting Coordinator for Sanctions, would fly to Brasília on May 5 to “listen to right-wing parliamentarians and former President Jair Bolsonaro.”

CNN further speculated that the meetings would address “not only Justice Moraes’ actions but also those of other Brazilian authorities, such as Attorney General Paulo Gonet.”

The story first appeared in Metrópoles, a formerly progressive outlet now accused of ideological entryism, before spreading to mainstream platforms like Veja—Brazil’s most widely read news magazine. Veja has a 40-year history of smear campaigns against the Workers’ Party and was once branded “a toxic rag with an agenda that goes far beyond journalism” by New Yorker veteran Jon Lee Anderson.

Veja quoted Eduardo Bolsonaro—the ex-congressman who fled to the U.S. last month—who said, “when I say Alexandre de Moraes’ potato is heating up here in the U.S., you can be sure it’s really happening.”

While Eduardo’s potato metaphor might seem inappropriate, it fits his family’s years-long hybrid warfare against Brazil’s judiciary, including their false narrative of a “dictatorship of the toga”—a framing normalized by outlets like the New York Times. Yet no major outlet bothered to seek State Department confirmation before publishing.

The U.S. Embassy in Brasília debunked the rumors in a May 4 press release, stating:

“The U.S. Department of State will send a delegation to Brasília, led by David Gamble, Acting Head of the Sanctions Coordination Office. He will participate in bilateral meetings on transnational criminal organizations and discuss U.S. sanctions programs targeting terrorism and drug trafficking.”

Notably absent: Any mention of Moraes or Gonet.

Veja buried this detail three paragraphs deep in its vaguely titled piece, “Who Is Trump’s Sanctions Advisor and What Is He Doing in Brazil?” Journalist Bruno Caniato conceded:

“The embassy’s release does not cite Justice Alexandre de Moraes… contrary to Eduardo Bolsonaro’s claims.”

Rather than clarify what was now confirmed as a false narrative, BBC Brasil doubled down with “Trump Sends Sanctions Director to Brazil: Could the Target Be Moraes?”—illustrated with a slant-shot, unflattering photo of the Supreme Court Justice who has become the primary Brazilian target of the international far right. The article insinuated “chilly relations” between Trump and Lula’s administration, only acknowledging the embassy’s actual agenda in the penultimate paragraph—and even then, casting doubt by claiming that BBC “could not confirm meetings with relevant agencies.”

As of May 8, Gamble has not met with anyone to discuss sanctions against Brazilian officials.

Perhaps scrambling to save face, CNN and others inflated a courtesy visit by Ricardo Pita—a 5th-echelon State Department official (Senior Advisor to the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs)—to Jair Bolsonaro. The ex-president later clarified the conversation was general, focused on U.S. interests in Latin America, with no mention of Moraes.

A May 7th Reuters article published in the Guardian made the purpose of Gamble’s delegation visit clear. It was to convince Brazilian authorities to designate Brazil’s two largest drug trafficking organizations, the PCC and the Comando Vermelho, as terrorist groups, to help facilitate the Trump administration’s deportation program for Brazilians. Unlike CNN Brasil, Veja and BBC Brasil, Reuters’ journalist took the time to speak to someone in the Brazilian government, quoting Security Minister Mario Sarrubo explaining why Brazil rejected Gamble’s request.

“‘We don’t have terrorist organizations here, we have criminal organizations that have infiltrated society,’ said Sarrubo. But Brazilian law, he added, only considers organizations that violently clash with the government for religious or racial reasons to be terrorists."

As shown by Reuters, it’s not that hard for a journalist to get a quote from a government official. Why would CNN, Veja, and BBC Brasil skip fact-checking to amplify a rumor spread by a known liar like Eduardo Bolsonaro? The most logical conclusion aside from pure laziness is editorial bias in favor of the Bolsonaros.

US bipartisanship: On May 19, Trump’s State Department offered a $10M reward for info on Hezbollah near the triple border. Then Marco Rubio pushed for Itaipu dam power to fuel US AI. Next day, NYT ran a bizarre ‘Russian spies in Brazil’ story, debunked by the Justice Minister. This comes on the heels of Bill S. 842: No Hezbollah In Our Hemisphere Act, submitted by Senators John Curtis ® and Jacky Rosen (D) on March 4. If it passes, Trump will have the power to declare countries like Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela as “terrorist sanctuaries.”.

After New York Times publishes an article claiming Brazil’s Federal Police have uncovered a Russian spy network, Justice Minister Ricardo Lewondowski debunks the story. "There is no concrete evidence that there is a large scale spy network here, from Russia or anywhere else.

“Our authorities in the military, the police and the national intelligence agency (ABIN) monitor this. Everything is operating normally.” At a press conference at Interpol’s 4th meeting with South American police chiefs, he said there is one, isolated case, which is currently being analyzed by the Supreme Court. “The Brazilian government will act in accordance with the Court’s ruling in this case,” he said. “Unless there is evidence of criminal activity, this is not a matter for the Federal Police to intervene in.”

The NYT is the voice of the Democratic Party. Democrats always work together with the Republicans in Latin American politics.

  • Capital firm to purchase The Daily Telegraph — Al Jazeera

    article text

A consortium led by US investment firm RedBird Capital Partners has agreed to buy the publisher of the United Kingdom’s 170-year-old Daily Telegraph newspaper for about $674m (500 million pounds).

Redbird said it has reached an agreement in principle to become controlling owner of the Telegraph Media Group, ending a lengthy takeover saga for the conservative-leaning newspaper on Friday.

Gerry Cardinale, founder and managing partner of RedBird, said the sale “marks the start of a new era for The Telegraph as we look to grow the brand in the UK and internationally, invest in its technology and expand its subscriber base”.

The Telegraph group, previously owned by the UK’s Barclay family, was put up for sale two years ago to help pay off the family’s debts. It publishes the Daily and Sunday Telegraph newspapers and weekly newsmagazine The Spectator, which all are closely allied to the UK’s Conservative Party.

In 2023, there was an offer to buy the publications from RedBird IMI, a consortium backed by RedBird Capital Partners and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a member of Abu Dhabi’s royal family and the vice president of the United Arab Emirates.

But the consortium pulled out last year following strong opposition from the UK government, which launched legislation to block foreign state ownership of the British press.

Under the deal, Abu Dhabi’s IMI will take a minority stake of not more than 15 percent in the Telegraph as a member of the consortium. The sale must be approved by British regulators.

RedBird has investments in football team AC Milan, the parent company of Liverpool football club and film production company Skydance.

Telegraph Media Group chief executive Anna Jones said that “RedBird Capital Partners have exciting growth plans that build on our success — and will unlock our full potential across the breadth of our business.”

The Spectator was sold in September to British hedge fund investor Paul Marshall

This will most likely result in the Telegraph being decimated and Red Bird tearing the copper out of the walls.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the Party, Government, and people of Vietnam on the passing of former President Tran Duc Luong. We recall his contribution to bilateral relations and his official visit to Cuba in April 2000, when he was received by Fidel.” Tran Duc Luong served as the sixth President of Vietnam from 1997 to 2006. Born in the Quang Ngai Province, he moved to Hanoi after completing high school in 1954. He studied geology and initially worked as a cartographer. In 1959, he joined the Communist Party, marking the beginning of a political career that would span several decades.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Tran Duc Luong rose through the ranks of the Communist Party, eventually becoming Deputy Prime Minister in 1987. He was elected to the Politburo in June 1996 and became President of Vietnam on 24 September 1997.

Panamanian Union Leader Saul Mendez Requests Asylum in Bolivian Embassy - Telesur English

    Article

The National Union of Construction Workers faces government crackdown. On Wednesday, the National Union of Workers of Construction and Similar Industries (SUNTRACS) said it is the target of a government crackdown under President Jose Mulino.

SUNTRACS Undersecretary Yamir Cordoba denounced what he described as “lawfare” and hate-driven actions against union secretary Saul Mendez, who has requested asylum at the Bolivian Embassy. Mendez is receiving temporary protection there while Bolivia’s National Refugee Council reviews his request.

“The Mulino administration intends to destroy SUNTRACS,” Cordoba said, calling for worker unity and urged the Panamanian people to show solidarity in defending SUNTRACS, which he described as a union that has always led the fight for public welfare.

In the early hours of Wednesday, union secretary Mendez sought refuge in the Bolivian Embassy amid an indefinite strike led by the union and ongoing investigations into alleged money laundering involving at least one of its leaders.

Earlier, the Second Prosecutor’s Office Against Organized Crime had ordered the arrest of 11 SUNTRACS leaders in connection with a case of fraud. This occurred without any prior official announcement from the Public Prosecutor’s Office. Later, the Attorney General’s Office confirmed that arrest warrants had been issued for unnamed citizens as part of a criminal investigation that dates back to 2022.

“The criminal case stems from a complaint filed by former workers from a construction project who were affiliated with SUNTRACS. The complaint, submitted by ex-workers, cites alleged crimes including aggravated fraud, money laundering, illicit association, document forgery, and misconduct in public office,” the Attorney General’s Office said.

On Tuesday, the Panamanian Autonomous Cooperative Institute (IPACOOP) had already ordered the cancellation of the legal status of the SUNTRACS Multiple Services Cooperative, citing at least “14 findings” that indicate alleged failures in money laundering prevention controls. On May 16, a judge ordered the pretrial detention of SUNTRACS leader Jaime Caballero for alleged money laundering.

Mendez, a leftist union leader who has accused President Mulino of being a “petty dictator,” ran for president in 2019 as the candidate of the now-defunct Broad Front for Democracy (FAD).

For the past month, SUNTRACS and public school teachers’ unions have been leading an indefinite strike and street protests against a proposed reform of the social security system. They have accused the Mulino administration of being part of a “mafia.” The strikes by teachers and workers have been met with violent police repression, leaving several people injured and others detained.

Last night, a third ballistic missile over a 24 hour period was launched from Yemen towards Israel. The missile was likely intercepted outside of Israel by the Arrow 3 midcourse interception system, given there was no footage of a missile or interception over Israel. However, the air raid sirens in Israel were still sounded.

Russia Appoints New Commander-In-Chief of Its Ground Forces - Telesur English

    Article

Gen. Andrey Mordvichev led Russian forces in the liberation of Mariupol. On Thursday, military newspaper Red Star reported that Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov appointed Colonel General Andrey Mordvichev as Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces.

At a ceremony attended by senior military officials, Belousov introduced General Mordvichev to the Ground Forces Command staff, describing him as “an experienced combat officer who has fully demonstrated his leadership abilities during the special military operation.”

Mordvichev replaces Army General Oleg Salyukov, who was recently named deputy secretary of the Security Council of Russia.

Born in 1976, General Mordvichev graduated from the Novosibirsk Higher Military Command School and later from the General Staff Academy. His career has included key leadership positions in both the Central and Southern Military Districts. In 2023, he was appointed commander of the Central Military District.

During the ongoing military operation, Mordvichev led Russian forces in the liberation of Mariupol and later Avdiivka in Donetsk, for which he was awarded the Hero of the Russian Federation.

Early Thursday morning, the Russian Ministry confirmed that its country’s air defenses shot down 105 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 35 over the Moscow region.

Temporary restrictions on the arrival and departure of aircraft have been introduced at Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport from 9:54 a.m., and at the city’s Zhukovsky Airport. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin on Thursday morning said Russian air defense continues to repel Ukrainian drone attacks.

translation from unsere zeit, the communist party newspaper in germany:

    Palestinian workers are being replaced

    article text

Israeli companies have relied on cheap and compliant Palestinian labor for decades. In the shadow of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza and the continued strangulation of Palestinian lives under occupation, another, quieter form of violence against Palestinian workers is taking shape: In recent months, Israel has embarked on an aggressive campaign to replace hundreds of thousands of Palestinian workers with migrant labor from Asia and Africa. Israeli capital is to continue to have a compliant labor force at its disposal, and what is left of the Palestinian economy is to be stifled even further.

This exchange of labor is not taking place in a vacuum, but reflects a larger historical pattern in Israel’s treatment of its labor force over the decades. Since the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza in 1967, Palestinian workers have played a crucial role in the Israeli economy, particularly in construction, agriculture and low-paid service jobs.

Israel cited security concerns to revoke the work permits of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians virtually overnight, crippling the Palestinian economy and rendering entire villages and towns jobless. Many of those affected had worked in Israeli companies for years without legal protection or the possibility of unionization.

To replace the Palestinians, Israel has sought bilateral agreements with countries such as India, Thailand, Malawi and Sri Lanka to send workers. Through these agreements, Israel gains tens of thousands of new workers for Israeli agriculture, construction and the care sector. Officially, these programs are presented as mutually beneficial, providing workers with jobs and training, but labor rights organizations say these agreements expose workers to abuses.

Many migrants pay high fees to recruitment agencies in their home countries and are already in debt when they enter Israel. Some reported that their passports were taken from them, that they were housed in poor accommodation and that they were paid wages below the legal minimum wage in Israel.

One of the most problematic aspects of this labor import system is the lack of control. Although the Israeli Ministry of Labor is theoretically responsible for regulating working conditions, the implementation of regulations often leaves much to be desired, especially on remote farms and construction sites. Non-governmental organizations such as Kav la-Oved have documented numerous cases of labor law violations, including unpaid wages and physical abuse. Under the agricultural internship program alone, at least 17 foreign “interns” have been recognized as victims of human trafficking, and there have been several deaths since the program began.

For the Palestinian workers who are being replaced, it is about far more than economic losses. For many of them, Israeli wages were their livelihood, as the occupied territories struggle with chronic underdevelopment, high unemployment and restrictions on movement that stifle the development of the local economy.

For them, the withdrawal of work permits not only means the loss of income, but also reinforces the fragmentation of Palestinian society. The financial burden increases and dependence on aid from abroad is strengthened.

At the same time, the Israeli economy, especially sectors such as construction and agriculture, is being burdened by the lack of Palestinian labor. Israeli business media have reported project delays and labor shortages, prompting companies to push for faster recruitment of workers from abroad. This has led Israeli companies to see foreign workers not just as a stopgap, but as a strategic alternative - a way to keep the economy going without political “risk”.

This dynamic highlights a deeper structural problem: the transformation of labor into a commodity under apartheid conditions. Israel replaces Palestinian workers, whose presence is politically explosive, with migrant workers from abroad, who are easier to control and deport and who have no claim to political rights. Labor is thus reduced to a commodity that can be imported and removed at will, regardless of the human cost.

Criticism is now being voiced internationally. In 2024, the International Labor Organization (ILO) received a formal complaint on behalf of Palestinian workers who had been denied wages and labour rights since the start of the war on Gaza. Israel is accused of violating international agreements on the right to work and collective bargaining. However, the complaint has few real consequences for Israel, as major donor countries and trading partners continue to prioritize political alliances over the enforcement of labor laws.

These developments show that Israel’s labor policies, shaped by the occupation, security doctrine and neoliberal economics, have a profound impact on both Palestinians and the growing number of migrant workers from other countries. The replacement of one large number of precarious workers with another illustrates the cruelty of Israeli apartheid, which simply restructures the labor market according to the interests of the state and corporations while concealing the continuity of exploitation.

Israel’s labor policies will increasingly rely on imported labor in the future, as the regime seeks to shield its economy from the political costs of occupation and intensify its apartheid and genocide policies. Palestinian workers are left out for now, and the migrant workers who fill the gap adopt the same system of weak protections, legal gray areas and systematic disregard for their human dignity.

Palestinian Faction Leaders Leave Damascus Amid Syrian Pressure and Crackdown

    full text

Several Palestinian faction leaders, including Khaled Jibril(PFLP-GC) and Khaled Abdul Majid (PPSF) left Damascus after coming under pressure from Syrian authorities. Their properties, including homes and offices, were confiscated despite no official expulsion orders.

The factions have been effectively banned from operating. They handed over all weapons, and authorities demanded names of members with personal arms. A source said there’s no real cooperation with the new Syrian administration.

The crackdown follows a request by US President Trump for Syria to expel Palestinian “terrorists” in exchange for lifting sanctions. Syrian authorities recently detained Islamic Jihad leaders and briefly held Talal Naji.

translation from unsere zeit, the communist party newspaper in germany:

EU representatives not interested in peace

    article text

The Fédération Internationale des Résistants (FIR) has issued a statement on the peace talks between Russia and Ukraine:

We would like to remind you that since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, FIR has repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire and the start of negotiations between the warring parties. In our view, this was the only way to end the war, which has already claimed tens of thousands of victims in the first few weeks, as quickly as possible. We were convinced from the outset that neither arming Ukraine nor the assertion of “unwavering support” from NATO countries would bring about a military solution to this conflict. We therefore welcome the fact that, following the Russian announcement as part of the unilateral ceasefire on the anniversary of the victory, talks between the warring parties have now actually begun again.

Now that the smoke from the smokescreens has cleared, we can see a little more clearly what has emerged from the negotiations between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul. The most important result is undoubtedly that, for the first time in months, a dialog between the warring parties is underway again. This gives hope to the people in the Russian and Ukrainian war regions, who are the main victims of this war. Secondly, the mutual exchange of larger groups of prisoners of war has been agreed. And thirdly, a continuation of these talks has been agreed. We as FIR can therefore only welcome the start of these talks.

We are also glad that the propaganda bluster and political influence in the run-up to the talks did not cause them to fail. At the same time, one does not get the impression that the four European statesmen who met with Zelensky had any interest in a peaceful solution. Although they represent three powerful states of the European Union and Britain, enthusiasm for the continuation of their war course is clearly waning even there. Nevertheless, the new German Foreign Minister, who is not even known to every government in Europe, believes he can issue an ultimatum to Russian President Putin to come to Istanbul - as if he were a naughty schoolboy who only needed to be admonished severely enough. In addition, a phone call was made to US President Trump to warn him not to make any agreements with Putin that run counter to EU interests.

The announcement that tough sanctions would be imposed if Russia does not give in highlights the absurdity of the EU’s stance. What is the point of a seventeenth package of sanctions if the previous 16 have already had little effect? Moreover, several EU states have already made it clear that they do not agree with this approach. Significantly, the European Commission decided on the sanctions package before the planned meeting in Istanbul had even begun. And, of course, it is to come into force even though the implementation of the results of the talks has not yet been completed. Ms. Kallas is already calling for an eighteenth package.

Zelenskys announcement that he only wanted to talk to Putin personally may have been good for a headline in the media, but it shows that there are still considerable reservations on the Ukrainian side about a direct dialog between the parties involved in the dispute to find a solution in the interests of the people.

Irrespective of such interference, it is indeed significant that this meeting took place in Istanbul. It is unclear what role the USA played in these talks. It was not at the negotiating table, nor were the European states. What is interesting about the USA’s change of strategy in the Ukraine war is the statement by Secretary of State Rubio that this war cannot be ended with weapons (i.e. Ukraine is not expected to win), but only through diplomacy. Apparently, the USA wants to keep its weapons ready for other purposes and not use them in Ukraine.

It is to be hoped that the Russian-Ukrainian talks will continue with less media fanfare. Otherwise, they could suffer the fate of the peace negotiations in spring 2022, which were broken off by Ukraine due to British influence. The consequences were devastating. It is interesting to note that even the new Pope Leo XIV has mentioned a mediation role for the Vatican. Such opportunities should not be missed in the interests of all people in the war-torn region.

    monkey-typewriter Portugal’s post election update.

With the votes from abroad not yet counted and with the likelyhood of the far-right CH obtaining 2 MPs more than the center-left PS and becoming the largest opposition party looming, the effects of the left’s historic defeat and the far-right’s rise last sunday are still being felt. Here’s what all the main actors are up to.

The communists didn’t rest on their laurels and immediately held a bunch of rallies right after the elections, its affiliated organizations are also still active, they’ve also already stated they’ll propose a vote against the government’s budget right away once parliament starts (which will clarify how he PS and CH will handle the center-right’s minority government), the idea seems to be to give despairing leftists hope that there are people still fighting the right and inspire them to join. Hey, it worked with me, I did join after a moment like this but it was in 2022 when the PS got a historic absolute majority, I thought that was bad enough, and now they’re basically in third place, funny how life works.

The post-trot demsoc BE, once having elected 19 MPs in 2019, is still reeling from having only electing its party leader, she basically blamed the “global right-wing shift” (which portugal has definetily joined) for the party’s poor result. I maintain that their situation is very fucked, with a disloyal soft left of the party easily going to the europhile pro-war greens and a loyal hard left of the party too historically resentful of the “Stalinist” (according to them) communists to support their coalition, a shame because they still got 100k votes and a lot of activists that could be very useful.

The PS general secretary, who was from the left-wing of the party even though he ran a very centrist campaign, resigned and since only 1 guy ran for his job, he got it. A man named Carneiro will be leading the socialists, however in portuguese “Carneiro” means “sheep” and is also slang for “cuckold” or “someone who sheepishly follows orders”, so following nominative determinism (WHICH IS REAL trump-anguish ) this man will never become prime minister. A Starmer-like figure (minus the transphobia hopefully) he’s made it clear that the party wants to form an informal “central block” with the center-right AD minority government for stability and to allow with to govern without having to depend on the far-right for parliamentary votes.

About that though…the AD which for years maintained a “no means no” stance regarding collaborating with the far-right now has revised that to mean “no only means no…regarding the far-right joining government”, they’ve opened the door to working with them in parliament, and even worse on possibly constitutional revisions. The right now has a 2/3 majority which means for the first time they don’t need the PS to revise the constitution and the far-right could possibly have a say. The liberals are already building a proposal to remove the “ideological charge” of the constitution, which was written in the aftermath of the revolution in 75 and has already been revised a few times (like to remove the un-reversability of nationalizations and stuff)

Oh and the public prosecutor, which has publicly announced they were investigating several politicians in the past few years, even during campaign season, but so far haven’t charged anyone, only NOW has said that they’re asking for further documents from the PM’s private business dealings and that ONLY NOW AFTER YEARS OF THIS SHIT they’re FINALLY investigating the far-right’s leader for “incitement of hatred” over 1 video he recently posted complaining about roma people, I doubt anything will come of it though.

It kinda feels like germany’s situation a few years ago.

    A dominant center-right in power.

A far-right being toe to toe with an increasingly centrist center-left, gaining ground on historically far-left regions on basically just anti-migrant discourse, shut out of government so it can always be in the opposition and with a lot of low education voters. With the key difference that unlike in germany the far-right here is a 1 man show and very personalistic.

A market-fundamentalist liberal party that pollutes discourse with easy solutions and can basically always be in the opposition (they’ve since lost their seats in germany but that won’t happen here since there’s no electoral treshold) and is very popular among well-to-do young people.

A socially liberal pro-war green party working as a stop-gap between the center-left and the far-left.

On the far-left is where I think there are the most differences, since Die Linke has definitely become a “normal”-ish party, pro-nato if a bit reluctantly, pro arms-shipments to ukraine and not very anti-israel.

Well portuguese people are always talking about how we suck and should be more like germany so there you go. attack-orca
