On the last day of school in 7th grade, we were taken to an amusement park. The claw machine must have been configured wrong, cause I won nearly every round. The kids all thought I was great at it. Knowing what I know now about how they have settings to dial-in how accurate they are, it had to be a botched setting.

Very nice. I’m assuming you won it the legit way. The last one I won, I swung the arm around really fast and knocked a prize down the chute.

The prizes were stacked higher than the claw and I moved the claw behind a group and whipped the joystick like I was whisking batter.

It was similar to this but faster.

Some kind of bouncy ball. The handles are fun to fidget with.

I have a yellow Kirby I won from a claw machine in Santa Cruz a few years ago. Only time I’ve won a claw machine that wasn’t one of those “play until you win some candy” types.

I don’t even usually play them much anymore after learning that the grip strength is a setting that limits it to pure luck than skill (like the claws won’t actually grip tightly every time, it’s like one out of every 10 or so plays). You ever get the claw on something and it just seems like it didn’t even try to grab the thing, that’s why.

1. Relevant commentary on your own dull life. Posts should be about your own dull, lived experience. This is our most important rule. Direct questions, random thoughts, comment baiting, advice seeking, many uses of “discuss” rarely comply with this rule.

2. Original, Fresh, Meaningful Content.

3. Avoid repetitive topics.

4. This is not a search engine
Use a search engine, a tradesperson, Reddit, friends, a specialist Facebook group, apps, Wikipedia, an AI chat, a reverse image search etc. to answer simple questions or identify objects. Also see rule 1, “comment baiting”.

There are a number of content specific communities with subject matter experts who can help you.

Some other communities to consider before posting:

  • what is this thing?
  • No Stupid Questions
  • Ask Lemmy
  • Self Hosted
  • Mildly Interesting

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

6. No hate speech, sexism, or bullying No sexism, hate speech, degrading or excessively foul language, or other harmful language. No othering or dehumanizing of anyone or negativity towards any gender identity.

7. Proofread before posting. Use good grammar and punctuation. Avoid useless phrases. Some examples: - starting a post with “So” - starting a post with pointless phrases, like “I hope this is allowed” or “this is my first post” Only share good quality, cropped images. Do not share screenshots of images; share the original image.
