DuPont and two other companies will pay New Jersey up to $2 billion to settle environmental claims stemming from PFAS, commonly referred to as “forever chemicals,” the companies announced Monday.
State Environmental Commissioner Shawn LaTourette said the deal with DuPont, Chemours and Corteva is the largest such settlement in the state’s history. It calls for the companies to pay $875 million over 25 years and create a remediation fund of up $1.2 billion. The companies will split the costs under the deal, which must still be approved by the courts.
DuPont said the settlement will resolve “all pending environmental and other claims” for ”legacy” contamination claims at four sites where the companies operated in the state. It comes just months after the state said chemical manufacturer 3M has agreed to pay up $450 million to resolve lawsuits over natural resource contamination stemming from PFAS.
$2bn? That is nothing.
“Up to $2b” means it’s almost certainly going to be significantly less.
Are they going to stop making vast quantities and pissing it over the entire surface of the earth? No? Then it is less than nothing.
Excellent video. I watched it last week. It made me leery of over half the items in my house as possibly contributing to my (unknown) PFAS load. It also makes me want to go test for it just to reveal what’s there. One more thing to think about. Yay.
My takeaways:
-
I am never eating Microwave popcorn again, jfc why does that not have cigarette level warnings?
-
Yes, chemical industries need significantly more regulation from regulators with significantly expanded authority. BECAUSE OF SH-T LIKE THIS. Holy fuck Trump is going in the other direction ofc save the Earth 8647
I haven’t bought microwave popcorn in 7 years. Here’s how to make it better :
- Popcorn kernels of your choice
- Popcorn Oil
- Lunch Paper Bags
- Toothpicks or plastic clip
For flavoring, you can do almost anything you want, but I will give you my favorites:
- Butter + Lemon Juice (added after popping)
- Tajin (added before popping)
- Salt (added before popping)
- Butter spray seasoning (added after popping)
Instructions:
- Add a 1/4 cup (60 grams) popcorn kernels to a small cup.
- Pour in a small amount of oil and any ‘before popping’ ingredients
- Mix the contents with a butter knife and pour into the paper bag
- Fold the bag back up so that the pounch at the bottom has the kernels and oil in it and is facing downward
- Fold the opening edge of the bag shut and secure by poking a toothpick through it or using a plastic clip
- Microwave for 2 minutes 30 seconds
Some other suggestions:
They make these Korcci Silicone Bowls and Nordicware has a ‘microwave popcorn popper’. The silicone bowls are meh, but are good for the lazy. The Nordicware one isn’t bad, just small.
A microwave hotplate or just plate can help pop the popcorn better and prevent the oil from getting all over your microwave.
Don’t get discouraged if you don’t do it right the first few times. It takes some balancing to figure out how to properly pop popcorn.
Hope someone finds this useful and please, feel free to ask questions.

Are they going to use some money to actually clean things etc.?
Doubtful. I don’t even know how you do that. Take a look at the Veritaseum video on PFAS linked here as it is good at explaining the scope of the problem.
Oh my, did we go and pollute all the world with forever chemicals? Whoopsie! Here’s about 30 seconds of profit, now you run along, and keep drinkin up on that PFAS, now ya hear…
Are they going to have a criminal record now?
Yeah, didn’t think so.
