Day 1 of the tourney finished a couple hours ago! Here’s how you can watch recaps, replays, or live! I only plan to post this again towards the middle, and then again near the end of the 15-day tourney. So feel free to post images, video links, comments, or anything else related!
Live / Replay:
- try searching on twitch, this tourney there are at least 3 different streamers providing live video feeds with English commentary, and it’s fun to have a community to chat with in real time. The top Makuuchi matches start around 3am US Eastern Time though. At least 1 of the streamers does replays all day, usually of the entire day (including lower ranks).
Video Clips:
- youtuber DonDon makes a daily video of the “best 10” matches listed in English with replays including on-screen English analysis; those are listed here: https://www.youtube.com/@dondonsumo2/videos Besides the “best 10” of the top Makuuchi tier, DonDon also makes a “best 5” of the second Juryo tier.
- NHK makes a daily video that has all the top-tier Makuuchi bouts with English spoken commentary. This video is replayed on their web site several times during the following day; you can see the schedule here: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/ look for “Grand Sumo highlights.” After a day of scheduled replays, the video is put up for “on demand” access here: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sumo/ and here: https://www.youtube.com/@NHKWORLDJAPAN/videos
- NHK immediately posts individual videos of each bout listed in Japanese with Japanese commentary. Their site is being redesigned and the reorganization is still a little unclear, but it looks like it’s available here: … CORRECTION: go to this page: https://www.nhk.jp/p/ts/Z8WRRJ9K96/ and use a translator to click on the link that says like "2nd day’s effort video / results ", or just try one of the first links under “お知らせ” (which means “News” ?) it might have a pointing hand emoji 👉 next to it.
- JSA immediately posts individual videos of each of the highest-ranked 10+ matches listed in Japanese with no commentary, here: https://www.youtube.com/@sumo-video/videos
- For the listings in Japanese, try automated translations if there’s a lot of text. Alternately, look for something like: 9月14日 which in this case refers to the 9th month and the 14th day (September 14th). Automated translation doesn’t work that well on sumotori names, but this is a great opportunity to learn them by sight! (The JSA web site has pictures of them all.)
Text Info in English:
- all results and standings and next-day schedule by sumodb
- results and more info from the JSA
- daily writeups by The Mainichi (may be delayed on weekends)
- for commentary, see the tachiai fan site

SPOILERS OK IN COMMENTS!!?!!
If you watch only one match, check out Tobizaru vs Shonannoumi!
Tobizaru vs Shonannoumi not a classic but entertaining.
Shishi looked shaky
Shodai alert early in a tournament! Could it be?
Midorifuji so good! The opponent started the throw, but MF put himself in a better position to finish it!
Ura vs Oshoma, you could feel that coming…
Kirishima so good!
Kotozakura out-Abi-ing AbiThe bow twirling felt a bit casual
Shishi looked shaky
Shishi always looks shaky! That’s why I like cheering for him. Even when he wins, he ends up in the second row of the audience or something. But I thought he looked a lot better on day 1 than he did the entire last 2 tourneys! I hope that means his injury’s healed up!
Ura vs Oshoma, you could feel that coming…
Ura was limping a bit after the bout, I hope he’s not too bad…
Re Aonishiki - he looked really nervous, even before the false start. The second start he looked really hesitant, which just wasn’t gonna work against Onosato who is currently at the top of his game. I don’t think Aonishiki recovered from his bad start. But note that in all 3 of his past tourneys in Makuuchi he lost at least 1 of his first 2 bouts, and yet in each case he went on to win a prize. This is his first tourney at Sanyaku so I don’t expect him to do as well as last time, but I hope he does as well as possible, learns a lot, and doesn’t get injured!
Shishi reminds me of a certain recently departed tall youngster who was also lacking in technique…
Wakatakakage getting blown away by Hakuoho was fun And Hoshoryu vs Tamawashi, man that was close!
starts at 8’, for those who haven’t seen it yet
it was a very surprising match indeed.
pm to ask me about Natto condensed, but complete, tournament footage, with statistics: Makuuchi, Juryo, and Makushita divisions
You do your own channel?
Oooh, I’ve heard of that, there’s this person called Natto who used to have a channel on youtube, then twitch, then a couple other places but they kept geting kicked off those services. Basically Natto would make a video containing only the matches, but the pre-match statistics they displayed were really well done. Last I heard (a year ago?) there was a discord you had to get invited to, then in the discord they’d post a download location. But I think that discord got shut down, or they moved to a new one or something. Dunno why Natto gets picked on so much, JSA oughta just offer em a job or something. Anyway personally I just use the resources listed above.
No, but I think Natto’s a great way to enjoy the tournaments, so I just shill for him whenever possible.
what’s that phrase the ref keeps repeating, for example between 1:39 and 2:09 here ☞ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8FcHwmnokI
and what does it mean?
At the very begining the gyoji (ref) says “Hakkeyoi” indicating the match has started. It means like “show spirit!” They might also say that if the fighting has stalled a bit (usually bc the wrestlers are grappling.)
After that, the ref is saying “Nokotta” repeatedly meaning that the match is still going on.
source: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sumo/sumopedia/17/
even after learning about it, i can’t collaborate “nokotta” with what i hear, which is maybe “tanokot tanokot tanokot tanokot taaaa” 😅
there is also another phrase between the matta-nashi and hakki-yoi, which isn’t explained in the linked video. any help?
another phrase between the matta-nashi and hakki-yoi
You’re probably thinking of “te wo tsuite” which means like “touch down with your hands” (to start the bout). Here’s a complete walkthrough: https://tachiai.org/2019/10/02/whats-all-the-commotion-part-2-matchmaking/
thanks
that was indeed a helpful link
