Day 9 of the 15-day tourney in Japan just finished a couple hours ago! Here’s how you can watch recaps, replays, or live! I only plan to post this again near the end of the 15-day tourney. So feel free to post images, video links, comments, or anything else related!
Live / Replay:
- try searching on twitch, this tourney there are at least 3 different streamers providing live video feeds with English commentary, and it’s fun to have a community to chat with in real time. The top Makuuchi matches start around 3am US Eastern Time though. At least 1 of the streamers does replays all day, usually of the entire day (including lower ranks).

- youtuber DonDon makes a daily video of the “best 10” matches listed in English with replays including on-screen English analysis; those are listed here: https://www.youtube.com/@dondonsumo2/videos Besides the “best 10” of the top Makuuchi tier, DonDon also makes a “best 5” of the second Juryo tier.
- NHK makes a daily video that has all the top-tier Makuuchi bouts with English spoken commentary. - NHK immediately posts individual videos of each bout listed in Japanese with Japanese commentary. Their site is being redesigned and the reorganization is still a little unclear, but it looks like it’s available here: https://www.nhk.jp/p/ts/Z8WRRJ9K96/ use a translator to click on the link that says like "2nd day’s effort video / results ", or just try one of the first links under “お知らせ” (which means “News” ?) it should have a pointing hand emoji 👉 next to it.
- JSA immediately posts individual videos of each of the highest-ranked 10+ matches listed in Japanese with no commentary, here: https://www.youtube.com/@sumo-video/videos
- For the listings in Japanese, try automated translations if there’s a lot of text. Alternately, look for something like: 9月14日 which in this case refers to the 9th month and the 14th day (September 14th). Automated translation doesn’t work that well on sumotori names, but this is a great opportunity to learn them by sight! (The JSA web site has pictures of them all.)

I tells ya, a Shodai with a rare good start early is scary!
I like the NHK daily recaps. Just a pity they’re always pretty late on YouTube.
Look for “Grand Sumo Highlights” on this page: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/ the NHK daily recaps are streamed 2 times a day before being put on youtube. (i.e. it’s not “on demand” it’s more like a TV show that you have to watch at a specific time.)
I don’t really do that any more. And even if i did it’s unlikely it would be in even I have time.
That was such a decisive win, all the more impressive since it looked like he was about to lose. Onosato has looked amazing this tournament.
Ura had one of his signature flips today. I was beginning to wonder where they were after showing up in practically every match last basho. He tried to set up something like his underarm duck out yesterday and it didn’t work out well for him.
Fujinokawa also showed some raw power with that lift out attempt, and his follow up throw was definitive. I hope he can stick around in maegashira for awhile–he’s doing some interesting wrestling.
I don’t think Ura pre-meditated that flip. I think he just… “rolls” that way lel.
When Fujinokawa tried that lift, I was like: WHAAAAA. I hope he’s short-listed for fighting spirit prize or something. At the very least, I bet his fan club gets a boost in numbers.
