That’s very far from justifying the behavior though (not saying you’re claiming that) and it’s weird that people complaining about the genuinely antisocial behavior of the git gud crowd are then just sort of mirroring the behavior. Isn’t antisociality the basic problem, the premise of the complaint? I think it’s like that Freire quote about how, in the absence of liberatory education, the dream of the oppressed is to become the oppressor (not that there’s much oppression here, but just speaking in terms of receiving and inflicting abuse). They don’t think to approach the matter except to take their resentment and turn it into a moralizing hatred directed at far more people than those who mistreated them so they can have their firm little ingroup where they are righteous, and maybe it’s maladaptive cope for feeling like they’re in an outgroup or something.

Like, idk, there was a thread here the other day that was just about playing Silksong and someone drives by to leave the comment “fromsoft still ass” and it’s difficult to understand how someone can be unaware that they come off as a miserable loser, not because they don’t like fromsoft, which is fine, but because they feel the need to signal their disparagement of it to people who weren’t bothering them. It’s like if people were all just talking about modern cubism and I drop in just to say “picasso still ass.” It’s like a child throwing mud, and you see a decent amount of people screaming into the void about how it’s all shit and the people who like it are terrible and I just need to wonder why the fuck they feel the need to broadcast vitriol. I suck at shooters and I have certainly been ridiculed for that growing up (a standard middle school experience, afaik), but why waste time just being an ass to unrelated people who like those games when I could go back to playing Kirby or something instead?

The main reason I’m talking about this so much, since it merits explanation, is that I think it’s reflective of a broader problem in people’s mindsets that we see all the time, including here, of responding to feeling like you’re a minority being treated like shit by making a space where you’re the majority and are enabled to treat the other group like shit. Obviously some groups inherently have it coming (bigots, etc.), but some obviously don’t. The original context is the most benign example imaginable, it’s just a topic that I was thinking about.

As someone who is a difficulty enjoyer, my large issue is when people claim that a game is ‘fair’. This is patently not true, especially for stuff like fromsoft (especially early fromsoft). Shit clips and glitches out, hit boxes are not where your expect them to be so where to dodge isn’t intuitive unless you just know. So it’s not ‘fair’. It’s unfair on purpose.

But half of the fun is figuring out how to break it in such a way that makes it feel like you are being unfair to the game. When you crush the hardest difficulty through understanding and mastery of the mechanics and game knowledge.

Nothing against those who just want to play through something casually though.
