In September 2022, Vladimir Putin announced a “partial mobilization,” drafting hundreds of thousands of Russian men to fight in Ukraine. Within a matter of weeks, Putin declared that the mobilization drive was complete. But three years later, he has yet to sign a decree to officially end the draft.

    Reading the perspective of these Russian soldiers felt a lot like reading the perspective of American soldiers talking about the Vietnam war in the 70s. Both feel lied to and used by their governments for vague and unrealistic purposes. Perhaps that is how all soldiers feel to some degree but these two conflicts seem to produce those feelings in more of them.
