• Anthropoic, Gemini, and OpenAI have all had plans for universities for a while now. Columbia University has been partnered with OpenAI for a year, and I don’t think this is radically different. The reason for this is that AI tools are being widely used in most industries (plus corporate clients will spend ungodly amounts on software like Matlab, and Solidworks), and model providers want as many people familiar with their systems as possible. Nothing has changed for students because of these plans — the ones that use these tools incorrectly will be harmed as per usual. The only difference is that whatever company that is making these services can push students at elite universities to lean their stack. Just like Solidworks student plans.
