It’s just a local culture thing, and according to Wikipedia isn’t even an exclusively Middle Eastern thing.

Still a crazy form of behaviour, though. People regularily get killed by it (I just now read the mentioned Wikipedia article).
I’m from the region and this is a thing even in places that aren’t and have historically not erupted into violent outbursts. It’s just a local culture thing, and according to Wikipedia isn’t even an exclusively Middle Eastern thing.
This gives me some hope. Maybe the connection to actual violence is weaker than I think.
