  • The competition is built around actions seen in rugby union, rugby league, the NFL and AFL. Opposing individuals – a ball runner and a tackler – stand at each end of a 20m x 4m field, and run full speed at each other with the goal of trying to bowl each other over.

RUNIT Championship League released a statement to Stuff on Tuesday afternoon after news of Satterthwaite’s death was made public, saying it did “not encourage any copying of the sport as it should only be done under the strict conditions”.

I don’t know what to say in response to that. Nobody (even a teenager) who actually thought about it would read this and think it sounds like a good idea. As a dad to a teenage son, it hits a bit close to home - feeling terrible for the family, but also wondering how you teach a teenage boy not do such stupid stuff.

I remember being young and invulnerable as well. I think teenage me could have been talked into doing this. That kid was an idiot.

  • although birth to an Italian father would ordinarily confer citizenship by descent, Albanese had no father recorded on his birth certificate and thus meets the parliamentary eligibility requirements of section 44 of the Constitution.

That’s an interesting little bit of information. He could have been caught up in the whole citizenship dramas of 2017 had he not been exempted by this. Though he had likely already known about his exemption since he knew his father was Italian and would have investigated whether he needed to renounce Italian citizenship.

  • My client is spending waaaaaaay more money on Microsoft Online than it ever used to on software licenses. Every single user in the business is costing 🇦🇺$30 per month alone just for their Office suite. That’s before you get to the Azure stuff. Some hosted apps cost over 🇦🇺$1k/month to host in Azure.

Before you go too strongly after Microsoft for charging so much, this is cheaper than what we used to pay for running our own SharePoint, Exchange etc farms as well as the infrastructure required to host websites/database etc. All that has been outsourced to Microsoft Online and saves significant money.

Microsoft is doing very well out of its own cloud fees and can cope with AWS, Google and all the smaller private cloud operations getting some of that action.

  • I agree with your first statement, but disagree with the rest. I am not their target market. I enjoy playing their games, but primarily because I am spending time with the kids as I do. Not many of their games are targeted to my demographic.

I disagree that they focus only on digital. Every single Nintendo game comes out on a physical chip. And sales on digital copies are rare and minor (30% off maybe). It is often cheaper to get a physical copy on sale cheaper than digital. And you can then sell it / buy it second-hand. I’ve read that with Switch 2, even the digital codes can be transferred to a new owner. Nintendo for all their faults have never forced you to lock in a digital library you can never resell.

  • You might be surprised. I came to the Switch party super late when I bought my kid a switch Christmas 2023. He’s all over Zelda now, has BotW, TotK and even Skyward Sword on his Switch. For him, these games are all from the last year. He turned 2 the year BotW was released.

It’ll be the same story with Switch 2. Some kid who might not even be born yet will get a Switch 2 in 8-9 years and come across these games with all his school friends.

I doubt I’ll go the Switch 2 path with the kids. I haven’t seen a reason to upgrade, yet. I’m thinking of the Steam Deck - while the Nintendo had a fairly cheap entry point to get on the platform, I’ve spent enough on games to negate the difference between a Switch and a Steam Deck - where I already have a 500+ game library to play on it.

  • 13 Minutes to the Moon

Season 1 is essential listening. It’s not very long, and takes you through the journey of putting astronauts on the moon with tech far less advanced that what you’re reading this on. It came sooooo close to failure on more than one occasion. When that lander touched down, it had something like 8 seconds of fuel left.

Season 2 is the story in detail of the Apollo 13 mission. If you loved Season 1 and want more, then go right ahead. I liked season 2, but nowhere near as much.

  • I guess if I had to send a fire at a house, I’d pick the house at the person/family who is unlikely to be financially destitute and potentially homeless for years after the fact.

The problem is that fire doesn’t discriminate. The rich and famous homeowners are making the news, but there will be far more regular people who aren’t particularly rich who are losing their homes also. West Hollywood is nowhere near as glamorous an address as it sounds to Australians. It’s not a rich area by any means.

Normally, we’d be sending a plane load or two of our own fireys over to help, but I don’t think we can do that in the middle of our summer. The US usually gets these wildfires in our winter.

  • I hereby dub thee “Eureka - Moderator of the World news!”

I’m open to the idea of renaming the Community. There’s no Admin tool to do that, but I expect that a couple of edits to the database will permit it to happen. I feel like we need a flow chart for this: Do we rename the community?
If yes, Rename would be preferred to abandoning it and leaving over a year of posts behind. So I’ll want to spin up a test community/rename it in the database before trying that approach on World News.

That’s a problem for future Nath - and only if we go ahead and rename the Community.

  • Why would she go to gaol for throwing a milkshake at him? Is it a greater offense to throw a milkshake at a member of parliament than it is to throw one at a regular person?

The fine is understandable for him to pay for clothing maintenance and shampoo. No issues there, either.

If she were an everyday office worker at some normal office, would that have mentioned that in the article? I don’t see the relevance in mentioning that she has OnlyFans. I don’t really see the relevance in mentioning that the milkshake was banana flavoured, either.

No Nige, there isn’t a two-tier justice system. It appears you are calling for one, however.

  • Sorry for a slow reply - I’d say it was a busy day, but in truth it has been a busy weekend/month even.

To answer your question: yes. We can set a community local-only. That’s probably a step too far, though. I’ll have to play with it to be sure, but I think if you set a community local-only, it isn’t even visible to non aussie.zone members.

I’ll have to have a think about it. Maybe a rule that goes something like ‘if it is obvious from your comment that you assume USA is the centre of the world, it’ll be removed’. Then we can report/remove such comments with a simple ‘rule 3’ comment etc. let them figure out what that means.

  • I don’t really disagree with what you’re saying, particularly regarding the response from politicians and assorted media commentators. I think the wider public response is more nuanced than just economic class, however. I believe the response has come more from the victim’s specific industry than just “kill the rich guy”. Similarly, I seriously doubt the reaction would have been remotely the same if the victim was a Millionaire who happened to own a business that made wardrobes. There is a real dissatisfaction with healthcare in the USA and particularly with Health Insurance companies.

The ‘that could have been me’ response was more because many people could see themselves being mad enough at a Health Insurer to kill a CEO than killing some guy because he’s rich. You could of course argue that they are dissatisfied with health care because the care they receive is tied to economic class, and you’d be right. So economic class plays into this response. It isn’t the whole picture, though.

  • We know that this particular murder received a lot more media and police attention than the hundreds of others of murders that happen every year in New York.

I think the difference with this murder boils down to how people have reacted to it. Normally when there’s an act of violence like this, people tend to think something like ‘that could have been me’ - being the victim. The difference in this case is that many people are thinking the same thing, but putting themselves in the position of the shooter instead of the victim.
