Europe@feddit.org•Britain fears Ireland is a ‘back door’ for Russian spiesEnglish
10·7 days agoThe country that suffered the second most damaging Russian psy-op in the western sphere - with the guy who spearheaded the movement polling significantly, mind you - is warning us Ireland is a backdoor for Russian spies. Huh. Guess they’re experienced enough.

2·12 days agoLook, I’d love for Peertube to rival Youtube (and it’s a growing platform, who knows what will happen in the future), but like you said, there are very few content creators and mainstream personalities there. Try looking up a song, a clip from a popular TV show, a game walkthrough, a stand up from your favorite comedian, a silly meme, whatever, and if you find anything on Peertube, that’s impressive, but on Youtube you’ll have dozens upon dozens of examples. The difference in scale over popular content makes any usability comparison right now just wishful thinking. This has been by far YT’s (and maybe on a larger scale Google’s) strength: everything/everyone is already there, so why go anywhere else, where not nearly the amount of people will be watching and bringing in money based on those views.
Still, I’m hopeful people will accept alternative platforms more and more, with how shitty the YT experience has been on the official client and I enjoy discovering new channels I can follow on Peertube, but as of now, I don’t think most people could ditch one for the other, realistically.

1·13 days agoThere’s simply not even close to the amount of content amassed on YT, and on Peertube’s case (and perhaps on the Fediverse itself), having to navigate through instances makes onboarding not as seamless as the alternative. On the other hand, I think YT’s monetization scheme makes it a more attractive platform at the moment, which further contributes to the extent of its user base.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What piece of media thoroughly disappointed you?English
4·17 days agoYes! That’s what actually got me into Star Wars fanedits and fanedits in general, he made the whole prequel trilogy into a unified experience. Saw one based on his editing notes and liked it, but through the years I’ve come to enjoy other takes from the movies, as well.

3·17 days agoI’ll name one for those three categories:
- Albums: A Perfect Circle’s Eat the Elephant, in 2018
- TV shows: Obi-wan Kenobi, in 2022
- Movies: Malignant, in 2021

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What piece of media thoroughly disappointed you?English
35·17 days agoMan, Phantom Menace being the worst Star Wars movie when it came out is like George W. Bush being the dumbest US president: those were simpler times, somehow.
I’ll say the prequels aged better than I’d remembered them, though. And they get a lot better with the existing fanedits, especially HAL9000’s take on Episode I, which trims a lot of the dumb humour, dials down the Jar Jar antics significantly and tightens the plot a nice bit, to make it more of a classic Star Wars adventure.

Europe@feddit.org•EU reaches deal on US trade pact as Trump threatens new tariffs by July 4English
251·19 days agoAccording to lawmakers, parliament agreed to scale back its demands – and the final text notably gave the United States until the end of the year to drop surtaxes above 15 percent on steel components, rather than insisting on it as a precondition.
The EU has absolutely no spine. This level of appeasement will only be rewarded with further scorn and disdain.

11·23 days agoAww, would you look at that? They think they’re the President.
Would love some cheesy B movies’ remakes, by people who understand the cult following and wouldn’t take themselves too seriously. Like Mario Bava’s Demons. I mean, riding a motorcycle down the stairs like Cloud Strife and chopping off demons’ heads with a katana in the middle of a random demonic invasion in a movie theater sounds awesome. Why can’t we have Fede Alvarez take a crack at that?
