I think a good place for left-wing coverage on the protests is hasanabi, either on his Twitter or Twitch (and wherever else he is found), as he’s been physically in the streets with the protestors and lives in the area.

Over the last few days, ICE raids have taken place throughout Los Angeles, as well as throughout America more generally. An increasing number of these raids are targeting migrants with no criminal record whatsoever (about 25% right now, but increasing constantly), which is a quantifiable escalation from both Trump’s first term and Biden’s term, where the figures were more in the realm of 5-10%.

Los Angeles has a large percentage of people who are Hispanic; as such, these raids were massively provocative, and protests began to oppose them. In response to these largely peaceful protests, the police have been exceedingly violent, with protestors and clearly marked journalists being shot at by police with “non-lethal” rounds. Trump has recently sent in the National Guard. The rhetoric of the Republicans has been, as expected, abhorrent and cruel.

While obviously coalescing around different issues, there are some parallels to be drawn with the Black Lives Matter protests five years ago; which, while drawing out enormous numbers of protestors, was eventually co-opted and gradually dismantled and failed to achieve lasting social or political goals. The two questions for this protest are: 1) What lessons have been learned by organisers and people on the ground from previous protests? and 2) Is there a general plan, or an idea of a plan, to affect political change (either top-down or bottom-up) that results in either fewer ICE raids or limiting their effectiveness?

So former argentinian president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner is now under arrest.

Supreme Court upholds Cristina Kirchner’s 6-year jail term and ban from public office

The ruling means Argentina’s former president has exhausted her appeals and her sentence will take effect.

Argentina’s Supreme Court has upheld former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s conviction in the “Vialidad” corruption case, for which she was sentenced to six years in prison and a lifelong ban on holding public office. The three Supreme Court Justices confirmed their unanimous verdict on Tuesday afternoon just after 5:00 p.m.

The ruling means 72-year-old Kirchner has exhausted her appeals and her sentence can take effect. Last week, she announced her candidacy to be a local legislator in Buenos Aires province, but today’s definitive sentence bars her from running.

    spoiler

In the “Vialidad” case, she was convicted of funneling 51 public works contracts in Santa Cruz province to a company belonging to her friend Lázaro Báez, in a process deemed fraudulent by Argentina’s judiciary.

The Supreme Court also upheld a verdict absolving her of charges of criminal association. The prosecution had asked for the additional charge to be incorporated, which would have resulted in a longer prison sentence. Kirchner addressed her supporters minutes outside the Justicialista Party headquarters after the verdict was announced.

“To the salary restrictions that Javier Milei’s government has imposed, the Judicial Party has added restrictions to the popular vote,” she said, comparing the ruling to the currency controls recently removed by the government.

She told the crowd that jailing her would not solve Argentina’s problems.

“They can imprison me, but pensions still won’t be enough and won’t reach the end of the month. They can imprison me, but medicines are more and more expensive and unaffordable, not just for pensioners but for everyone. They can imprison me, but parents will still believe their children have the right to eat four meals a day.”

President Javier Milei celebrated the ruling, writing “Justice. The end.” on X. He denied rumors that he had cut a deal with Kirchner to guarantee her impunity, calling it a smear by “corrupt journalists, accomplices of lying politicians.” He replaced each S with a $ sign.

    Peronism rallies around CFK

Former President Alberto Fernández supported Kirchner, who was his Vice President. The two fell out while in office. “In a state under the rule of law, the opposition is not persecuted, but judged according to the law,” he wrote on X. “Something that has not happened with [Kirchner].” Sergio Massa, who served as economy minister under Fernández and chief of staff under Kirchner, said the case was “riddled with irregularities” and asked the Supreme Court to accept the extraordinary appeal filed by Kirchner’s defense.

People gathered outside the headquarters of the Peronist party in Buenos Aires on Tuesday, following similar congregations on Monday. Those attending were a mixture of Peronist organizations, trade unions, and members of the public. “If I have to stay, I’ll stay. If I have to camp here, I’ll camp. I’m going to hold out here, even if I am the last one standing,” Susana Barros told the Herald, her voice drowned by the sound of snare drums. “The government set out to destroy her,” added Barros, who works at a cooperative that cleans Buenos Aires’ most contaminated river.

Senator José Mayans told the press that Kirchner is “not scared.” “She is very calm, she knows what Argentine politics is like. Perón was imprisoned, Lula was too. I think the Argentine people will react to this lie carried out by the Milei administration,” he added. In anticipation of the Supreme Court’s verdict, crowds of people blocked four highways into Buenos Aires City — the Panamericana, Acceso Oeste, the La Plata-Buenos Aires highway, and the Ricchieri. At the time of writing, the blockade continues. Meanwhile, security forces fenced off the Supreme Court building.

    Questions over the ruling

The ruling means CFK’s candidacy to be a lawmaker in Buenos Aires province is already over, just over a week after announcing her bid for election. Her supporters have described the case as political persecution. They view the conviction as a means of banning a key opposition leader and the head of Peronism.

Constitutional lawyer Andrés Gil Domínguez called the ruling a “constitutional scandal,” as the Court used Article 280 of the Code of Civil and Commercial Procedure, which allows it to reject recourses without the need for arguments. He added that the Inter-American Court of Human Rights told the Argentine State that the article is “incompatible” with the human right to a well-founded judgment.

Gil Domínguez also said that Kirchner was sentenced without the court irrefutably demonstrating her responsibility. “She was convicted with circumstantial evidence, or indirect evidence of low intensity,” he told the Herald, adding that there is “very little proof” connecting Kirchner to the crime of defrauding the state.

“The existing evidence that links her with this scheme is that she was President and sent budget bills to Congress, which Congress approved, to send public works to Santa Cruz,” he explained. He said that, since the Court upheld the conviction, it is “setting a very low standard regarding the protection of the presumption of innocence, and within that logic, Javier Milei should be called to testify for the $LIBRA case because there is direct evidence there.”

However, he said that the ruling does not mean Argentine courts will start using that standard from now on. “It seems to me that when the accused belong to Peronism, the time of justice is hurried, and the standards are relaxed. When those who have to be accountable before justice are non-Peronist, the cases are closed, the guarantees are extended and much stronger.”

I don’t care about the corruption charges, wether they are true or not I couldn’t care less. Corruption is a perk within Capitalism, it’s just part of the system. However, this is 100% a move to block the main opposition figure from running at any election. Cristina, despite her age, still holds tremendous political popularity, and this move might even backfire against milei’s government. It even made the Trots ally with the Peronists, at least for a while lol… We’ll see.

Also the supreme court’s judges were picked by the opposition to Cristina lmao. It’s obvious.

Relatively small solidarity protests going on in multiple cities. Could really roll into something, but i am unsure of how big without a huge ignition, like ICE being caught brutalizing someone on camera.

If there is a “peak” to this current deal, its going to be this weekend, barring something wildly inflammatory happening. For 6 months into trumps presidency, its definitely something, and even if it fizzles out this time, its probably going to keep happening over time. Gonna be interesting times.

Edit: interestingly near me there is a way larger than I would expect protest in a pretty suburban area. It is heavily Hispanic, so makes sense, but also its Tuesday. It looks to be well over 1k people, and that is genuinely surprising. It might go pretty hard on the weekend.

The crowd looks to be families and very chill, of course it didnt stop the county pd from rolling out the riot gear. Death to America.

  • A federal district court judge declined California’s request to issue an immediate temporary restraining order that would bar Marines and National Guard troops dispatched to Los Angeles from doing anything other than guardian federal buildings.

The judge, Charles Breyer, instead scheduled a hearing for Thursday on the state’s request for a restraining order.

Has anybody else noticed how when riots and protests pop up in non-American nations (not even enemy nations, just any other nation like Peru or France) basically the entire internet sides with the protesters. However when it’s the exact same conflict in the US, the reactionary news media and propaganda is so powerful that it overwhelms that and the “popular” position is to shit on the protests?

Compare Reddit threads, YouTube comments, Instagram comments, TikTok comments, etc. between the riots in Argentina or Peru to the ones in LA. It goes from like 95% support to like 40%

It really is remarkable the hold that the capitalists here have on the zeitgeist. American conservatives seem to be way better at controlling the conversation than conservatives in other places.

We often make fun of the American population and how cowed it is, how much they let themselves get cucked and never protest in response. Part of that is whenever we try we get mocked by everyone and attacked from all directions at a scale that nobody else has to deal with. Our population is not just cowed and complacent, we are actively oppressive to ourselves. The masses seem to openly revile the act of standing up against the government, and take a vindictive glee in seeing the government crack down on people.

Maybe I’m remembering things wrong, but it feels like these protests themselves are MUCH less hot than the George Floyd protests were, but the response from the police went from 0 to superviolent way faster.

There were less than 10k people downtown on Sunday. No significant property damage occurred until the police liberally deployed less lethal munitions, which was immediately followed by the waymo massacre. There was hardly any violence directed at police. Some small rocks, spitting, and they threw lime scooters at the patrol cars. I think one patrol car may have been lit on fire.

It didn’t get out of hand until after the heavy police response, and the scale is still pretty low compared to George Floyd. I still don’t know how much “looting” there actually was.

Yesterday was a much smaller crowd, maybe 1-2k. Police were using less force then Sunday and so there was less “chaos”. As always, the heavy property damage is spurred on by police brutality. In the absence of the heavyhanded tactics (there was still some amount of less lethal force but not as much as Sunday) the protest mostly turned into a street dance party

I remember in 2020 a lot more people weren’t working because of COVID, so more people were able to hit the streets. Probably smaller crowds this time around for that reason too

The chuds have been steeped in civil war style rhetoric since 2020, they were already frothing, but now they probably see themselves as invincible with the current administration. The protests I’ve seen have been dispersed violently much more quickly than the early ones in 2020 and have probably a tenth of the people at most. Police seem to have already amped up the violence to levels similar to the repression in 2020 as far as use of munitions and attacks on press. But I’m seeing much less tone policing this time around and more sentiment even from libs like “why the fuck should they be peaceful when there are masked fascist thugs disappearing children?”

A Criminal Network is Behind the Attack on Uribe Turbay: Colombian Prosecutor’s Office - Telesur English

    Article

On Saturday, he was shot twice while giving a speech at a campaign event in the Bogota neighborhood of Modelia. On Monday, Colombian Attorney General Luz Adriana Camargo stated that the investigation into the attack against Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay is pointing to an organized criminal group. The masterminds of the attack, however, have not yet been identified.

“We are perfectly aware that the young man who was arrested is merely the perpetrator,” she said at a press conference, adding that her “goal is to establish who carried out this criminal act.” Currently, the investigation into the attack against Uribe Turbay is on a large scale, involving at least 180 officials, including investigators from the Attorney General’s Office, intelligence agents, and members of the National Police.

“With all our capabilities, we are conducting a judicious, transparent, and serious investigation,” Attorney General Camargo stated. On Saturday, Uribe Turbay, the presidential pre-candidate for the Uribe-backed Democratic Center party, was shot twice while giving a speech at a campaign event in the Bogota neighborhood of Modelia. The perpetrator of the crime was a 14-year-old boy who was later arrested.

That same day, the 39-year-old politician underwent two surgeries, on his head and a leg, at the Santa Fe Foundation, one of Colombia’s most prestigious medical centers, where he is hovering between life and death. “His condition is extremely serious. Therefore, the prognosis remains reserved,” added Monday’s medical report, signed by Dr. Adolfo Llinás Volpe, medical director of Santa Fe Hospital.

Complicity of anti-Cuban politicians with repression in the U.S. denounced - Prensa Latina

    Article

Havana, Jun 10 (Prensa Latina) Anti-Cuban politicians in the United States remain silent in the face of the wave of repression against migrants and journalists in Los Angeles, California, denounced today the island’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez.

In protests in #LosAngeles we saw excessive use of force, use of #US National Guard, attacks on journalists, violation of migrants’ rights. But so far we have not seen condemnations of those facts from anti-Cuban politicians. Their hypocrisy is serious and sickening, accused the Chancellor in X.

The protests and their federal response continue to escalate this day with calls for demonstrations in the cities of Atlanta, Burlington and New York under slogans such as ‘ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) out’ and ‘Stop the deportations’.

Thousands of people expressed in the streets their rejection of the immigration policies of Donald Trump’s administration, which the day before ordered the deployment of two thousand additional National Guard members and about 700 Pentagon Marines.

In the midst of the acts of vandalism and the use of force to placate the demands for fair treatment of migrants, the rhetoric of the president is directed against the governor of this western state of the country, Gavin Newsom, and the mayor of the city, Karen Bass, whom he accuses of incompetence.

“It looks very bad (the situation) in L.A. SEND IN THE MILITARY!!!” Trump wrote on his own social network, and threatened to ”deploy military everywhere. We are not going to let this happen to our country. We are not going to let our country be torn apart.”

On his side, Newsom sued the Republican administration for “deploying a state’s National Guard without consulting the governor of that state is illegal and immoral.”
