GitLab, a significant player in the open-source and DevOps communities, has announced a major restructuring as it prepares for what CEO Bill Staples calls the “agentic era” of software development, in which AI agents play a larger role in planning, coding, reviewing, deployment, and maintenance.

GitLab had shitty data privacy practices from the start. There are better sites for Open Source software, like codeberg.org or notabug.org. And one can self-host a git repo and a tarball from something as simple and small as a Raspberry Pi running a Gemini server written in Rust (Gemini the frugal network protocol, not the google AI crap).
