Tbh i’d never invest in a laptop but i have no interest in having a Good Computer that’s also mobile. PCs are for gaming and shit, my phone does all the carrying around the internet i need

but in the context of my needs the modularity of PCs means they effectively last forever if you’re just replacing stuff that breaks, computer of theseus y’know. But maybe laptops have gotten easier to work on idk (doubtful though)

I got a Latitude 7400 for like 200$ a year or so ago. They’re pretty good if you throw linux on them and just want to do web browsing and basic office tasks. Built like tanks. Have a shitty little fan that whines like crazy but i just locked it to 2.5Ghz and the fan never runs.

Used T450-480 can still be found for fairly cheap on ebay, although it may be somewhat location dependent now that shipping is fucked.

They’ve traditionally been a great value proposition because they’re sold en masse to corporations that upgrade every year and offload the old ones, so there’s an oversupply of lightly-used enterprise laptops. I’d never buy a thinkpad new and I’d never buy any of their consumer models.

Look into Framework laptops if you haven’t. Basically everything is replaceable/upgradeable, even the main board.

But yeah, if you’re looking for a good inexpensive laptop, I would go with the T480 as another commenter suggested. They’re a bit dated, but they’re very repairable machine. Buy one with a good amount of RAM. Throw an SSD in it and install something like Linux Mint or Pop!_OS and you’re good to go.

This is why the game I’m making runs on Godot’s “compatability” renderer. If you can’t run at 60fps on a decade old business laptop you’re not future proofed!
