LG’s new robot lacks arms, so it comes with lots of limitations, but I wonder if it’s the first example of something we haven’t seen before. A home robot that isn’t just a novelty or toy.
This looks like it will have the AI capabilities of some recent LLM models, and use voice as an interface. LG is due to show it publicly for the first time next month but says it will have conversational abilities. There’s a niche for caring for some elderly people, who while living independently and not in need of full-time care, still need some assistance. This robot could help with that job, and be a point of contact for more distant family members.
It will be interesting to see pricing on this. Even in the $1,000+ range, this could be a very useful tool in many people’s homes.
No arms is a huge limitation but just the ability to contact a family member and book medical appointments by using natural audio commands is huge on its own.
