The wait varies widely around the UK, according to QueerAF. Times can range from three years in Nottingham, to 41 years in Belfast and a staggering 224 years in Glasgow.
What does this even mean? No-one is waiting 224 years, unless a trans person from 1800 just got their first appointment. Why hide a real problem behind absolute bullshit headline figures?
The wait time is estimated based on how many people are in line compared to how quickly they’re receiving service. It’s like if no one is seeding your torrent then the ETA is infinity, but as more seeds come online, the ETA reduces.
That said, I don’t know what the actual figures are that they used or where they got them from.
The data comes from a series of 30 FOI requests and was published by QueerAF. I didn’t post this though, as even with and archive link, you need to sign up with an email to read most of it https://www.wearequeeraf.com/gender-clinic-files-some-people-in-scotland-will-never-get-a-gender-clinic-appointment-on-a-224-year-waitlist/
Sure. But I wouldn’t write an article with a headline saying that my torrent was going to take 1000 years to download, because I’d look like an idiot.
I would if the lack of seeding was an intentional bid to drive me to suicide.
All the more reason to take the topic seriously and not publicise nonsense figures, if you ask me.
It’s definitely one of those headlines that they write to get people talking - just like we are right now. Threads like this are money in the bank to modern media. Instigate the buzz with specious headlines, assume only a few people actually read the shit, cash in the clicks. It’s deeply cynical.
