Imagine drawing on a globe instead of drawing on a map. Now if you take any point on the globe and head “west” while remaining (roughly) equidistant to the north pole, the north pole will remain north, not north-east from your position no matter how far west you go.Edit: Others already explained it, I just saw the dunking before I typed my message.
Polar bears pretty much attack on sight, so probably that, since barring elliptic geometry he walked 1 mile west but his corpse was carried back where he started. Grizzlies are more likely to attack than black bears but you have to have something they want usually (like food) since most bears are kind of lazy.
Unless he was a reactionary and encountered a hexbear.
