Nobody wants to bring in shipments because shit could change in the time it takes to get here.

Even “reshoring” is a bad business call because all of the equipment and materials that go into that are more expensive and uncertain.

If Trump doesn’t fold soon, we’ll be on track for a sequel to the Great Depression.

Even if shipments resumed, and there is no indication of such (that I know of), with the time it would take for freight to make its way to consumers, not to mention the resulting congestion, it be long enough to cause serious trouble. I’d be surprised if the drepression isn’t already there, and the symptoms are just about to manifest

Just a few more weeks of this will cause enough trouble in the supply chains that even if Trump completely drops all tariffs to zero, there will be significant economic problems. It takes at least 2 weeks for a ship to come from China and that is assuming that everything is running smoothly.

The number of ships coming into LA today is lower than Vancouver, Canada. You can look at real time tracking for cargo ships and it’s crazy how empty the US ports are compared to normal. Shanghai still booming tho

If your in america and have the means to you should be making sure all your electronics, clothes, etc are good to go for the next few years. Its gonna be hard to find and stuffs gonna be expensive. I don’t have money for new clothes which i already needed and its worrying me. Maybe i can make my own out of blankets and stuff lol. Luckily i rarely upgrade tech anyway and know how to repair stuff so on that i should be fine. Food should be alright for most things atleast. Hope you don’t like Tilapia tho. Like 90% comes from China.

You can buy used clothes, you know. Not to knock your attempt to make them yourself, that’s cool, but there are plenty of ways to avoid having to do that.

Well i imagine the used market prices will go up too it wont be immune to tariffs. Since the supply is limited, and everyone needs clothes. If people cant find them new theyll all go used, and people like me that were already buying used and wearing stuff til it fell apart will be pushed out of even that.

used markets are already precarious, new manufactures are flimsy and theres only so much surplus antiques able to enter the market. then again the US has sat on such a high throne of excess its hard to say how much is out there

Exactly. The lack of junk from overseas may be painful but it’s the wakeup call we need. America can and should be protectionist and buy American. We’ve been sold down the river.

Edit: Just realized this is a hexbear post. It explains the antagonistic meme responses. My mistake for posting here I know better.

You are so wrong. China and others have been providing US with aid by sending goods in exchange for financial claims which may not even be claimed for real goods.

Recognize that US is getting free lunch and that its manufacturing decline is its own choice of relying too much on capitalists.

America can and should be protectionist and buy American

why? So you can get something of worse quality for 5 times the price? Are you ever going to understand that 21st century globalization was designed for YOUR benefit so some sweatshop worker in SEA can make you a pair of sneakers for barely more than the cost of materials? Maybe if chuds like you opposed the international slaughter and oppression of ecological activists, labor unionists, and anti-imperialists the fucking coddled modern American “worker” (consumer) wouldn’t feel like they’re getting outcompeted by the rest of the world now. Get your shit together and realize a global proletarian revolution is in your best interest, before the armed guard drags you back into the coal mines.

I understand full well the bargain that was made after WW2. America trades it’s useless paper slips for goods in countries with low or no regulations. As a result manufacturing etc was hollowed out. I didn’t make that decision.

I still prefer a bronze age tier collapse over whatever “revolution” you’re talking about where anyone who disagrees gets lined up and shot. The world will become multipolar and balkanize. It is a better path forward than the musings of the “marxist-leninists” on Lemmy. People have nationalities, religion, culture and want borders between them and the other. A 19th century political philosophy isn’t doing to change that. It will just cause a lot of people to die.

The place I grew up in was right next to a border which is a river, during the summer me and my friends would sometimes swim to the other side to get an ice cream and a coke, now over there I could still speak in my mother tongue, they didn’t have a different culture really they were pretty much the same as me and no one was mad that a few youths didn’t care much that they crossed some imaginary line.

‘Nationalities’ and ‘cultures’ are often even younger than literally ‘19th century political philosophy’ like the German empire didn’t exist until 1871 so someone like Karl Marks wasn’t German he was Prussian at least according to his nationality, France had to spend centuries to eliminate other languages and there’s still pockets of speakers of different languages in it speaking Basque, Occitan and even Dutch, this is such an ignorant take that only a yank could come up with because you live in an actual wasteland and it’s not even true for your own country you just never bothered to look further than the little kingdom that is your lawn in suburbia.

The world as it is now will become multipolar but only the American Empire will “balkanize” taking it’s “outdated 17th century political philosophy” of “Liberalism” with it and setting the stage for the next era in Human socio-ecomonic development in socialism just as feudalism gave way to capitalism. comintern

People have nationalities, religion, culture and want borders between them and the other.

People want their material needs met, and when they get that in an unequal manner under the capitalist system, they want to enforce a border that enables the exploitation of the underclasses to continue. They follow along when the capitalist hegemony points the finger at other nationalities, religions and cultures cause they have no theoretical grounding. We have seen this recently with trump and co. Saying “see those sweatshop slaves in Asia? They need to pay their fair share! These tariffs will fix that” and the seals bark and clap for him.

A 19th century political philosophy isn’t doing to change that.

Implying that a political philosophy developed in direct response to capitalism isn’t relevant in the still-capialist global mode of production.

Implying that Marxist political philosophy hasn’t evolved since Marx. Hint: “Marxism-Leninism” was developed from and after Lenin, making it literally a 20th century development. Maoism later than that, not to mention other newer strains of Marxist theory that are adapted to current material conditions of the 21st century.

It will just cause a lot of people to die.

Implying that the Russian and Chinese revolutions (etc) “just caused a lot of people to die” and there’s nothing else, positive or negative, that can be learned from these events. Implying that all was well and peaceful before the communists just showed up one day and started killing everyone who disagreed.

I don’t even consider myself “M-L” or whatever, but I encourage you to develop a deeper analysis of these philosophies and historical events. They are going to have a larger and larger effect on your life as the PRC becomes the primary driver of the global economy that you participate in (whether or not you agree with their particular actions and activities)

US can’t make shit as long as it’s in capitalist mode.

Setup SOEs, set prices to match imports and not worry about deficits. Use the Dollar privilege to your advantage.

            Tariffs are not the way.

Sorry, but I was making a display of layered Hexbear irony. There is no transition plan to support a revival of domestic production. The stage is set not for that, but to turn the US interior to a resource colony, illiterate with a life expectancy of 40. Without a social revolution, that’s what’s in the cards.
